Is stretch film recyclable?

Is stretch film recyclable?

In short

Yes. Stretch film is polyethylene, marked with recycling code 4 (LDPE), and can be recycled where used film is collected clean and separately from other materials. New packaging rules in the EU and Türkiye push in the same direction: less packaging, recyclable packaging and responsibility for the packaging you place on the market.

The short answer

Stretch film is made of polyethylene, a thermoplastic that can be melted down and made into new products. Under the EU identification system for packaging materials (Commission Decision 97/129/EC), low-density polyethylene is marked 4 (LDPE); PVC, by comparison, is 3. Whether a given roll actually gets recycled depends on how the used film is collected.

What makes it recyclable in practice

  • Collect it separately: clean, single-material film is far easier to recycle than film mixed into general waste.
  • Keep it clean: labels, tape, dirt and food residues lower the quality of the recycled material.
  • Don't mix plastics: PE and PVC are different materials, recycled in separate streams.
  • Separate the cores: paper cores belong in paper recycling. Coreless film avoids them altogether.

Using less film in the first place

The film that is never used is the easiest to recycle:

On the production side, Öncümak's SP-1400 produces pre-stretched film and the CR-1700 coreless rolls.

What the rules say

European Union: Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (EU) 2025/40

  • has applied since 12 August 2026 and replaces the 1994 Packaging Directive;
  • all packaging must be recyclable; from 2030 (or later, once the detailed criteria are adopted), packaging below the recyclability grades it sets may no longer be placed on the market;
  • plastic packaging must contain minimum shares of recycled content, with targets for 2030 and 2040;
  • each Member State must cut packaging waste per person by 5% by 2030, 10% by 2035 and 15% by 2040, compared with 2018;
  • from 2030, at least 40% of the transport packaging that companies use within the EU, which the regulation says includes pallet wrappings and straps, must be reusable within a re-use system, subject to the exceptions it lists.

Türkiye: Packaging Waste Control Regulation (Official Gazette 26 June 2021, issue 31523)

  • its definition of transport packaging covers packaging that makes storing and moving sales packages easier and protects them from damage, the typical job of pallet stretch film;
  • under extended producer responsibility, those placing packaging on the market register in the Packaging Information System and meet the obligations the regulation sets, including a preference for recyclable packaging.
