Stretch hood vs stretch wrap: which one fits your pallets?

In short

A stretch hood is a film sleeve, smaller than the load, that a machine stretches and pulls over the pallet; stretch wrap is film wound around the load in layers. Hoods are fast, fully automatic and protect well against the weather, but each load size needs its own hood. Stretch wrap adapts to almost any load, by machine or by hand.

Two ways to cover a pallet with stretch film

Both methods use film that holds the load as it tries to contract, and neither needs heat. The difference is the shape of the film and how it gets onto the pallet:

  • Stretch wrap is film from a roll, wound around the load in a spiral, by hand or by a pallet wrapping machine. See how to wrap a pallet.
  • A stretch hood is a tube of film, smaller than the load. A machine stretches it open, pulls it down over the pallet and lets it contract around it.

What the EU guidelines say about stretch hoods

The European Commission's cargo securing guidelines (2014) describe the stretch hood as developed for weather protection that can be applied automatically at high speed. They list:

  • Advantages: high-speed automatic application, perfect weather protection, and a lower cost than shrink hoods. A well-designed, well-applied hood can make a load unit very rigid.
  • Limits: it cannot be applied by hand, because the forces needed to stretch the film are too high; and it is not flexible, since every load size needs its own hood size and its own settings. A hood a few centimetres larger than optimal hardly holds the load at all.
  • Layered products: for loads built in layers, the hood should be stretched in the vertical direction as it is applied.

What the EU guidelines say about stretch wrap

For stretch wrap film, the same guidelines note that it can make almost all types of load units rigid, as long as the most suitable settings are chosen: pre-stretch, overlap, number of wraps along the height, wrapping speed, roping and film type. They also note its limits: proper manual application is not possible, perfect weather protection is not possible either, and the right settings can change considerably when the packed products change slightly.

Which one fits?

  • Many different load sizes, or small volumes: stretch wrap, which adapts to each load. For loads that travel by road, wrap by machine.
  • High volumes of uniform pallets that must stay dry, for example outdoors: a stretch hood line can pay off, as long as load sizes stay stable.
