Where is slit stretch film used?

In short

Slit stretch film is ordinary stretch film cut into narrow rolls. Narrow rolls are easier to handle on small, long or round products (profiles, cables, hoses, pipes) and are used for bundling and surface protection, from building-product plants to car workshops.

What slit stretch film is

Slit stretch film is stretch film cut into narrower rolls. A rewinder with slitting unwinds a jumbo roll and cuts the film lengthwise into several equal rolls while rewinding it. Öncümak's SM-1300 models, for example, divide the jumbo roll into 2 to 10 equal parts: a 50 cm jumbo roll becomes two 25 cm rolls, three rolls of about 16.6 cm, four 12.5 cm rolls, and so on down to ten 5 cm rolls. The film itself is the same; only the width changes.

Where it is used

  • Profiles: aluminium and PVC window and door profiles, trims and other long, narrow building products are bundled and protected from scratches and dust during handling and storage.
  • Cables, hoses and pipes: round and coiled products are easier to wrap with a narrow roll that follows the curve; the film keeps coils together and the surface clean.
  • Car workshops: the steering wheel is wrapped in stretch film to keep it clean while the car is being serviced or repaired.
  • Bundling small and loose items: boxes, parts, tools, furniture parts or lengths of timber. For light bundling, narrow film replaces tape, twine or strapping, and it leaves no adhesive residue.
  • Wrapping small loads by hand: wherever a full-width roll would be too heavy or wasteful.

Why a narrow roll?

  • Better control: on small diameters and short lengths the film goes exactly where it is needed
  • Less waste: a wide roll on a thin profile wastes film at the sides
  • Lighter: easier to use by hand all day

How it is produced

Slit rolls are produced on slitting rewinders. Öncümak's SM-1300 L, SM-1300 2S and SM-1300 2S PRO offer slitting as an option on every model: with a core in each roll, they divide a jumbo roll into 2 to 10 equal rolls, down to 50 mm wide. The coreless CR-1700 divides a jumbo roll into two equal coreless rolls. These are the models in the range that slit; the SR-1500 and SP-1400 rewind at full width. See rewinding vs slitting.
